The Therapy

What is Forest Therapy?

Often referred to as an ancient/new practice, Forest Therapy has its origins in Japan.  Shinrin-Yoku had a resurgence in the 1980's when the "techno-stress" connected with the increased use of technology was making people unwell. Symptoms included; anxiety, headaches, depression, mental fatigue, insomnia, irritability.  Increased rates of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and suicides were all directly attributed to the stressful lifestyle.

The forest environment has long been enjoyed for its quiet atmosphere, clean air, natural light, and earthy scents. Empirical studies over the past 20 plus years, have confirmed that walking in the the forest may have beneficial effects on human health.

The walk is slow, and quiet; we are simply being in nature, connecting with it through our senses.

I am your guide; the forest offers the therapy.

What to expect

Walks are usually about 3 hours in length.  Trails are selected for their ease of access and features that contribute to the experience (water, older trees).

Where will we meet?

I have identified beautiful local trails that are accessible for most people and close to communities to reduce travel times. Trails are in forested settings and so it is important to have appropriate footwear.  I will provide more details on what is required upon receipt of your booking.  We will meet at a common parking area, before the walk, where I'll provide an introduction and orientation.
